Poster

DUE: Last week of classes (exact dates are on Canvas)

25 points

1. Creating the poster

The poster must be about 3X4 feet. This is so that it projects fine on a computer projector. The poster must show the title, author name, and affiliation at the top. Remember that the goal is to present this poster in 3-5 minutes. Click here for useful tips from ACM XRDS on how to create a research poster.

2. Submission

All students must submit the poster called EID_poster.pdf via Canvas. If we are able to print the posters, I will arrange for that, and you will present them in the 3rd floor lounge. However, most likely, we will have you present the posters in class, using a computer projector.

Update April 10: We are not going to print posters. For on-campus students, we will do poster presentations in class. The submitted posters will be projected on the screen in class using the instructor's laptop. On-campus students will get 4 minutes to present the posters. Try to explain the key points, not everything. I will make all the posters available to the whole class for viewing after class.

Distance students will need to create a video recording of their presentation by displaying the poster on their screen and speaking about the poster. Note that we do not need to see you. The visual part will only be show the poster. The instructions for creating a computer screen+audio recording are provided below. This recording should not be more than 5 minutes long, so please prepare a script in advance if it helps, and test it out before creating the final recording. Submit the recording along with your poster in Canvas.

3. Recording instructions for distance students

You have two options for recording your speech. You can choose to record just audio as an mp3 or similar file. Since I will have the poster in front of me as a PDF file, I can refer to it while I hear you speak. The other option is to do a video recording of your poster on a computer screen while you speak.

You can use any video recording software that you want as long as the video is of acceptable quality. Don't use a cellphone camera in front of the screen. The resolution should be clear enough to show (1) what you are pointing at with your mouse, and (2) the poster on the screen(s). The video should also be steady.

Here are some examples of video capturing tools. Mac users can use the built-in QuickTime player to record videos. Here is a video tutorial on how to record using QuickTime on a mac.

Another tool is Screencastify Lite. Use the free version since your video will be less than the max limit for the free version.

In the submission dropbox for the poster, you will upload the PDF file of your poster and upload the video file. Alternatively, you can deposit your video in a cloud-based storage such as DropBox, OneDrive, and GoogleDrive, and submit the video link in Canvas when you upload your poster PDF file. Make sure that the video is not password protected.
