Augmented Reality Assistant (ARA)

The Augmented Reality Assistant (ARA) application was developed in partnership with the Nancy Richardson Design Center (RDC). Using Unity and the Vuforia engine a prototype augmented reality (AR) training application was created. It’s intended purpose is to assist in training students on the use of different tools and machines located within the RDC fabrication labs.

ARA Screen Shot

When a user scans an image target a Quest Step object appears that helps to guide them through the machine use process. These Quest Steps can be progressed or regressed to desired steps. As the steps change the text, position, and spatial highlights of the Quest Step object updates accordingly.

This prototype is part of a larger research project intended on evaluating the efficacy of using AR for training purposes. A pilot study was conducted with an LEF-300 UV printer housed within the RDC. Feedback and results from this pilot study were used to update the application as well as inform proposals for a greater research study.
